First of all, a tribute to the best Indian soldier ever Field Marshal Manekshaw. He died today. He was one of the founding father of Indian modern state. As Nehru was prime inspiration and lighthouse in politics in initial years of India, Field Marshal was for army personnel. He was famous for his inspiring words and guiding a policy of involvement of army in political matters. It was fortunate for India to have him in those scary times of late 60s and 70s, when everywhere else in the world democracies were falling apart and military was taking over.

I read two very opposite kind of news in last week about Kashmir. First was that a rail road is about to complete to link Kashmir valley to rest of India. This is supposed to bring new wave of economical development in valley. Second news was that on 20th June some student hoisted Pakistani flag at Kashmir University and gave their arrest in support of separatist militants. Though these news items have no direct connection, but we can easily predict that if the first news would have come 20-30 years before then we should not be hearing the second news. There is a high pitched debate going on among Indian bloggers whether India can produce an Obama or not. (here, here) By “producing an Obama” we mean the very rapid rise of a particular leader at the national level like Mr. Barak Obama in USA. We know that India always has tradition of old leaders, leaders in their 90s, 80s. We have Mr. Advani, age above 80, Mr. Karunanidhi, Buddhadev Bhattacharya, Devegauda as patriarchs of Indian politics. But we do not have any leader in his 40s or 50s, who has a national appeal (I do not consider Rahul Gandhi, Jyotiraditya Sindhiya as leaders), Though Mayawati, Narendra Modi, Prakash Karat have shown promise.
