Problems in Functioning of Political Parties in Indian Democracy

Unlike western countries where democratisation was a product of industrialisation and economic development, for India Democratisation was a means of social and economic development.Due to this, there are various dichotomies regarding text and context of India. For instance, we have a secular state (according to constitution) but not a secular society.

Dichotomy regarding state and civil society influences the functioning of political parties and government to a large extent in Indian democracy.Democracy makes government and parties function in a constraint fashion. Here, I analyse how political parties function inadequately and how these inadequacies are somehow inherent in Democracy of  third world societies. India will be what we are

jawaharlal nehru speech

jawaharlal nehru speech

Jawaharlal Nehru’s broadcast to the nation on August 15, 1948 is noteworthy because the words he uttered then hold considerable importance for our contemporary political life. Excerpts from that address are being reproduced here. Better late than never :)

Let us not forget where we have failed or where we have erred. For our failures and errors have been many. Some of these are obvious enough, but the real failure has been a failure of the spirit and a falling away from the high standards set by the Father of our Nation, under whose wise guidance we had struggled and marched for over a quarter of a century. He taught us that worthy ends could only be achieved through worthy means, that ideals and objectives could never be divorced from the methods adopted to realise them. He had told us to cast out fear, for fear is not only ignoble but is also the parent of hatred and violence. Read the rest of this entry »

5 Reasons why it is best time to start an all-out military campaign against naxals

say no to lal salaam

So, central government has banned CPI maoist, the main outfit of maoist and naxalite activities in India. It is a much awaited action and finally government woke up when these so called revolutionaries had taken over a large part of Lalgarh. Anyways better late than never. But it should not be stopped here. Government should start an all out campaign and mind you military/para-military campaign, not a police one to flush out all the naxalites from whole country, so that a right environment of development can be created in naxal affected areas. 10 top issues Indians are going to vote for in 2009 election

india-election-issues

This is a list of issues, which are going to play important role in General election 2009. They spanned over terrorism, recession, personality cult, development and traditional Hindu-Muslim fight. List is in no particular order, so here we go:

  1. Terrorism: The biggest issue that every election all over the world is plagued with is terrorism. India is one of the worst hit country by terrorism. Over the last 5 years more than 2000 people has lost their lives to this devil and the worse part is that government does not seem to do anything solid for internal security. NDA is pitching high on this issue, with Narendra Modi as their mouthpiece, Congress is surely on back-foot here. Regional parties are not too much concerned with this issue. But it is a big issue in urban India only. Though Delhi constituency election 2009 is quoted as example of BJP not gaining from this issue. Read the rest of this entry »
