There is a high pitched debate going on among Indian bloggers whether India can produce an Obama or not. (here, here) By “producing an Obama” we mean the very rapid rise of a particular leader at the national level like Mr. Barak Obama in USA. We know that India always has tradition of old leaders, leaders in their 90s, 80s. We have Mr. Advani, age above 80, Mr. Karunanidhi, Buddhadev Bhattacharya, Devegauda as patriarchs of Indian politics. But we do not have any leader in his 40s or 50s, who has a national appeal (I do not consider Rahul Gandhi, Jyotiraditya Sindhiya as leaders), Though Mayawati, Narendra Modi, Prakash Karat have shown promise. Whenever someone tries to say that India should reform its economy and move towards open market, many, and mind you ‘many’ people start to question it on the basis that it will not be good for the 70% of rural population. India is growing like a big balloon economically. Some fears that this balloon might explode like south-east Asian countries and we should not indulge in western concept of market. But they forget that same countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore) were able to raise the life style of their citizen by a considerable amount when India was tottering in 70s and 80s. Millions of Hindi speakers across India and the rest of the world have a reason to cheer: Google News is now available in Hindi.

Google News gathers news stories from the various Hindi news sources on the web and presents a ranked one-page summary with all the links to your favourite news sources in the various sections. One of the interesting challenges google faced in this edition was the fact that not all Hindi news sources are in UTF-8 format. Though google strongly back and urge the adoption of the Unicode-based UTF-8 standard by all Indian language websites, google didn’t want to deprive hindi readers from reaching content on some of google’s favourite news sources which are not yet there. So google internally translate this information to the UTF-8 standard and do all the processing necessary to provide links to these sites. Google hope that this edition will enable the huge Hindi-speaking Internet population to easily reach all of their favourite news content across the web, and also help news publishers to connect to their audience better.

So India got “Right to Information Act”. Is it same good old news? No! This time India’s premier institute IIT Kanpur was on fire. Fire was started by your truly by posting a document on local news group of IITK, which I got from one of my friend, who in turn got it by RTI from Dean’s office.This document describes the CGPA (CPI) distribution in different batches of IITK in terms of number of students.
