Promise of Reason

Let us convert emotional issues of Indian politics and society into rational discussion

Hopes are shattered and nightmares prevailed, UPA 250, NDA 160 : Share Your Views

lowering the flag

So, the results are out and it is exact opposite to what this blog predicted. It is a major win for congress, in every state and every part of country. All other major alliances are decisively defeated. Congress says it is a vote for development and for its crown prince Rahul Gandhi. He did revive congress in UP as promised.

Still my biggest sympathy is with BJP, which is the party I voted for. A nationalist party. It is a loss of face for BJP.
But friends, There are times in history of a nation when all seem lost and looks like wrong forces have won the final battle. But dear friends, it is just a process, which goes on and on. 5 years may be significant time period in life of a man, but in life of a nation (that too a nation like India) is just a flickr of eye.

The time after defeat is not for grief and blame-game. It is the time to introspect and start preparing to come out as winner in next battle.

Though hopes are shattered and nightmares are prevailing, the dawn will surely come. It is not the first black day of Indian history, we survived and fought back. Let us do that again.

Tell us what do you feel, comment!

BJP under LK Advani was a complete failure…I think Bihar and Karnataka are silver linings for NDA.But Varun Gandhi episode clearly affected BJP.BJP was always against Gandhi family and emergency .But now they were behind Varun and Sanjay Ganadhi (indirectly Indira) was such a pathetic situation….BJP needs to go back to its roots rather than relying a lot on allies and a few leaders.

    Ungracious in defeat indeed.
    Dear SM,
It is ironic that you should chose to use ‘girte hain sheh sawar maidan-e-jung mein, voh kya girenge jo ghutnon par shale’. Because it just so happens that that saying is taken from a ghazal, a form of poetry originating in pre-islamic arabic verse. An excellent example of the pluralist nature of India’s culture and society.
India’s past cannot, and should not be contorted and stripped to fit a hindu mould. It is objectively untrue. This great nation has been built up by a pluralist society. The traces of this diverse past greet us daily, even in your own choice of words.
Whether you like it or not, India is a diverse nation composed of people of varied faith, castes, races, whatever division you want to apply. It is my belief, that a party that seeks to aggravate these divisions to exploit to it’s own advantage should be shot down by the people.
And the ‘nationalism’ that is spoken of. That spirit has echoed in other countries around the world before. The leaders invoking those emotions are well known. Their names are Hitler and Mussolini. They too spoke of economic gains at the cost of a minority community. The names have changed, but the tactics have not. The resemblance between the fascists of yesteryear, and the Hindu right in India is very, very scary. Make no mistake, I am in no way criticizing patriotism. What I am criticizing is a divisive slogan that unites one part of the populace, at the cost of another.
The only torch that your beloved hindu right-wing militancy carries is that which it uses to burn down shops belonging to a Indian community that it was politically prudent to alienate or to torch innocent Indian civilians who may have exercised their freedom of speech in a manner that did not agree with their interests.
The politics of hate, of one-sidedness, of uncritical thinking without reason must end.
Do not close you eyes for the next five years, enforcing the darkness you speak of upon yourself. Open them, and see the bright, united future Indians have chosen for themselves.

sad results for BJP. But “girte hain shehsawar maidan-e-jung mein”. We should still be thankful that we have a credible “Hindu-right” in India. Let the torch keep on burning for now in the age of “secular-darkness”.

I believe it is a vote for Man Mohan Singh, for all the good work, be it NREGS, RTI, Several Public private partnerships to build infrastructure, and more importantly loan waiver (which is rather a bailout for the disadvantaged populace).

    Congrats MMS and Sonia Gandhi.

Apparently, both LKA and Modi focussed too much on finding faults, and carried vilified campaign, Modi went far ahead and he should learn from Rahul Gandhi.

I’m relieved, that a stable goverment, and able leadership is going to lead the nation.

    Hello Satyanveshi,
What will you say about Andhra Pradesh? Congress got positive vote here.

  18. 4
    satyanveshi Says:

A surprise for everyone I guess. Even Congress didnot expect this neither did the BJP nor did the 3rd front or 4th front. But did India really vote a positive vote for congress. I dont think so. Chidambaram lost who was both the finance and home minister. Manmohan singh did not even contest the election. Congress gained in UP on Mayawati’s expense. All BSP voters who are traditionally minority voted for Congress this time since BJP was never their choice. There was only the traditional voting percentage for BJP which was not enough to get them their seats. In Maharashtra the votes for BJP-Shiv Sena were split with Raj thakeray’s MNS and that got the extra Congress seats and loss of seats for BJP. In Kerala and West Bengal, it was a vote against the communist state governments and only alternative in people’s mind is Congress there. So it is not a positive vote for Congress or Sonia or Manmohan. Some suprises are Sad indeed and we will see India going behind the world for another 5 years probably.

    RAJ Says:

Mohit, India’s Demographies are getting altered severely.
    NO Hope Left.

  20. 2
    Mohit Says:

The main reason for defeat of BJP is that instead of having a concrete agenda of their own, they were busy finding flaws in congress’s agenda, countering that at every step.
All we can do is hope that they don’t repeat the same mistake NEXT time.
